Elan Vital was born in New York City and was the son of a prominent lithographer. Vital attended a high school for gifted students and graduated with the equivalence of an Associate Degree in Engineering at seventeen. He began working for IBM as a design engineer for projects such as the Manila airport and a hydroelectric dam in Pakistan. Vital's passion for art eventually took over, and he left the corporate world to pursue a career in art. While designing psychedelic lighting equipment in Manhattan, he met Andy Warhol. Warhol supplied all of the monetary resources necessary to allow Vital to create the first psychedelic discotechque, which is located on Saint Marks Place in New York City. Vital moved to Hawaii in 1988 and created a sculpture of a humpback whale to donate to Maui's Ecology Park - it is the largest sculpture of its kind in Hawaii. Shortly after, Vital began creating his signature gemstone inspired paintings with his unique medium - a mixture of aerospace enamel, exotic pigments, and finely ground minerals. He is the only artist in the world to use this medium. Currently, Vital is the number one selling artist in the Hawaiian islands.
